Obscenity and nudity in The Times of India news daily

For some times, I have observed that 'The Times of India' is giving more space to nudity and obscene photographs and news stories. It all begin with small pics of some glamour dolls in ‘News Digest’ (first page) or in graffiti (last page). Then it was Page 2 ‘cinema gossips’ where every other day a nude picture of Holly/Bollywood diva is posted.
Now, it’s even in the main news item that TOI doesn't miss a chance to print obscene, indecent, and lewd pictures. Quite ironically, tt all began under a beautiful name of ‘Save the Girl Child’ and see where has TOI gone. Is it necessary to print naked female figures to save the girls and women? Every now and then TOI bring sensual story in the name of ‘save the girl child’. Their representation of the story which is illustrated with similar kind of picture is so lascivious, voyeuristic and libidinous that at times it raises serious suspicions in the mind of readers. What is the intention of TOI in ‘Save the Girl Child’ campaign? Is it really to save girls and women or to give worst schemes and designs to woo, seduce and molest more girls and women?
What happened in Patan or is happening with females in society is a matter of a grave concern. But is it proper to give such a prurient coverage of entire episode? Worst were the photographs TOI printed with these stories.
Similarly, in the coverage of love affairs of political leaders of France and Russia, is not TOI crossing the boundaries of decency and decorum? If your answer is no, have a look at the nude pictures of their love ladies posted in TOI. After ogling over the pictures, if you don’t agree with me, ogle again with your parents and children.
The Times of India has the largest circulation in India. It is most read English daily in India. It’s not because of chauvinist approach to sexism. It is because of respect and reverence this news paper has in the eyes of readers. Is not TOI falling in high opinion and esteem of readers? Is not the value and worth of TOI decreasing because of such news items and photographs? If TOI is viewing to increase viewer ship by such mean attempt, I would say that those who are viewed as target readers for such content are surely not reading TOI. There ia a lot of such stuffs available in market ( and almost free on web), which is far ‘better’ than what TOI offers.

It is in this connection that we need to take note that TOI has been a purveyor of a new culture on soft porn in India preint media. I spotted one online petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-reading-times-of-india-the-pornographic-paper.html which had been floated some time back on this issue. I also spotted a interesting blog enttry at http://dilipbarad.blogspot.com/2008/04/obscenity-and-nudity-in-times-of-india.html also highlighting the same.
The blogger Dilip Barad lamented

How can TOI get away with this sort of journalism? Is there no Press Council which can take action? Or is Press Council powerless?

  1. hi,
i couldnt agree more to your TOI related post.... i have worked for the organisation hence can claim to know the working philosophy of the company... the basic difference between us and the TOI is the way we perceive newspaper... to common man a newspaper is a mass media impacting lot of lives and hence carries lot of social obligations... while to TOI newspaper is as good as any other business product which has an economic value and they are here to make money like any other business enterprise...

now if you actually sit an think they are not wrong at all in their myopic sense.. because they have invested money in technology, human resource, products, etc just like other business... but unfortunately what they dont see is..unlike any other business, the product here is being consumed by millions of people at one time and is perceived to carry credibility...

culturally if you see.. we always tend to believe the written word more than the verbally spoken facts.. hence a newspaper has a far out reaching social obligation while typing any thing or for that matter printing the lewd photographs.. (whats a half naked uma thurman doing on sports page!!!)

you not here to sell the newspaper based on the tickling content but on the editorial which enquires into people's acumen and soul...

as of now they dont seem to listening... but as they say "satyam aev jayate"

  2. Maulik, Thanks for your thoughtfull comments. If anyone argues that nudity in Times of India is for business or to earn more readership, I would not agree with it. B'coz, there are so many sources available today, to satisfy the urge to view nudity. I dont think such people may be subscribing Times. Times has a reputation of one of the best English News papers, which ca be read by Father - Daughter together. Now, I doubt this credibility of Times. Is ToI listening?

  4. Yes I do agree with you, Mr. maulik said that the TOI is also a market product and they have to keep in mind the market value of that product(TOI,THE NEWS PAPER) I would like to use the word the newspaper instead of "product"because it not such product, which is like soap, food item or any drink. For such items we may use the word prouct but not for the NEWSPAPER. As far as the investment of money and human labour is concern ,that i think can also be gained through ADVERTISEMENT AND PUBLICITY, if those things are done without money in TOI then one may say that the half naked photograps and some sensational news is necessary to fill the gaps of income and the energy they are wasting behind the news items.
My dear friend how can you forget that journalism in general and THE NEWSPAPER in perticular is one of the pillers of demcracy and it must be without any corporate mentality. If i am not wrong news paper has played a vital part for the freedom of our mother land. Otherwise tha days are not far away when THE TIMES OF INDIA will work as a substitute of the magazine THE PLAYBOY. And will really change the " THE TIMES OF INDIA " for the citizen of INDIA.

  5. hi
I am fully agree with you bcoz the magazine 'The India Today'feb 2010 on the very front page that we can see the picture of and the another page on page there were obscene picture.Generally we find that only 'English magazine and Emglish news paper' has that obsenity.People fell that its a very modern and nobody will take an objection and generally people believe that readers will take it for granted.but it is not so of course the 'Times of India' and other magazine are vell reputed sources of information.but they should think about it.
    thanks.

  7. Dilip, I totally agree with your article. Times Of India is openly promoting porn - obscenity, nudity in a public media. Not just that. TOI has taken a step further. It openly promotes articles which justifies teenage sex, pre-marital sex, how its ok for Men to cheat.

TOI is now targeting children and young teens entering the internet world. Nowadays even a 7th or 8th grader has a Facebook account and they are using internet. I came across an article in TOI which conveyed to its readers that in their research they found that adolescents who had sex did not end up with poor grades.

Why should TOI publish such as article - targeting children and very young teens? Why should TOI promote Pre-marital sex and teen sex philosophies?

Coorporations likes TOI, India Today and Rediff which promotes nudity in their websites and newspapers don't really care about society. They only care about their big kick backs money from partner corporations for promoting adult material.

Some might ask what's wrong with that? Are we a moral police to judge TOI?
Researchers have shown how increased nudity / vulgarity leads to more sexual assualts on women. In India, we see that the number of sexual assaults on women are increasing every day. We hear news of rape in Delhi almost every week.

When you live in the society and we don't fix the problems and then it will come back to you like a boomerang.

Today in US parents are scared to let their children play outside their home even for a few minutes with out supervision. Why? Because there are sexual predators and sex alcoholics who kidnap women and children. There is news of sexual assault on children every other week.

How do people become sex alcoholics? Watching nudity, obscenity, vulgarity and violent videos regularly corrupts the mind.

If we don't want to end in an Indian society rampant with sex alcoholic and predators then we need to act now. We need to stop nudity, open porn in public media - newspapers, cable channels etc.

What can we do? Spread the awareness, write blogs and hope the government will wake up and realize the harm done to the society by irresponsible media and do the right thing.

  8. Jornalists in TOI are highly westernized. They associate all western things to be modern. So they have a false notion of right and wrong.Obscenity is loved by them because it generates money and also suits their bad(good?) habits. Some of the main editors like Vinitha Nangia come from the fashion industry infamous for sex and sleaze.
